Bars and Divider LinesBars, or divider lines, provide a visual method to illustrate a break between sections of a web page. Some authors set apart the header and/or footer from the rest of the text, and in other cases, a series of bars illustrate the beginning of a new section, similar in function to a text heading. A simple gray bar can be written into the HTML code by simply inserting <HR> at the point where the line is desired. Artistic bars can help define a theme or general appearance of a page in the same way that a background or logo can distinguish your page from others. An artistic bar is included in the document as follows: <IMG SRC="path/filename" HEIGHT=xx WIDTH=yy ALT="meaningful text"> Height and width should be specified to assist the web browser in displaying the graphic with the correct dimensions. ALT tags display meaningful text when, for whatever reason, the graphic cannot be displayed, or if the user is viewing your page in "text-only" mode. This eliminates the error icon that would otherwise appear. Many authors choose to use ALT="" with no text between the quotes; generally this eliminates the error icon yet is unobtrusive when being used for simply decorative purposes.
